Oberammergau 2010
Miss this year's Oberammergau 2010 Passion Play and you will have to wait
ten years for the next. This incredible spectacle involving a cast of 2,000
people from the Bavarian village of Oberammergau, high in the Bavarian Alps, began life in 1634, after plague swept southern Germany. The tiny village escaped with little loss of life and, as a result, they pledged to stage the passion play every ten years to thank God for his mercy.
The play tells the story of the resurrection with spectacular stage sets and
the backdrop of mountains. Starting in the afternoon, the story unfolds
until dusk, with a generous break for dinner. When you're not watching the
amazing story – translated into English in the programme – you can wander
Oberammergau's pretty streets and enjoy the gorgeous alpine murals painted on their walls.
It's the perfect holiday by coach. The Bavarian mountain scenery is fabulous
viewed from a coach window, high above the walls and traffic and the area is studded with attractive villages which, from spring onwards, bathe in swathes of alpine meadow flowers.
